Reviving theatre and artistic activities in my community by taking the initiative to engage young people in extracurricular activities. I created an environment where I have invited many youths to take part of several performances. My aim is to improve education and work on social issues.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The lack of extracurricular activities and the absence of art in schools and institutions, as well as the lack of understanding social problems and the ability to identify them. As an English volunteer teacher, I have noticed that students have no interest at all in having after school programs, and this is because there aren't any! Their energy has nowhere to go so most of youths tend to deviate and take wrong paths and experiment bad things.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The proposed solution is creating an environment to young people where they can be prevented from the boredom that usually leads them to trying bad new things. Also, one of the best ways to improve education is by allowing students to express themselves outside of the classroom and challenge themselves to discover their talents and boost their self confidence. My project is a theatre club for youths and children, where several artistic activities ( Plays, competitions, rehearsals, etc...) take place and many young people can come and share their passions.
Impact: How does it Work

This project, although at its beginning, has benefited students in many ways. Firstly, four months after engaging almost 100 student in rehearsals to perform plays, I made a survey and their teachers filled it in. I noticed that they all agree that the students became more active, more participanting in the classroom and even more excited to show up to school every day! Also, some of the plays are in english/french, which helps them improve the language. In addition to that, they become aware of problems that the society is facing and work on presenting solutions through art and through the stage!

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Several schools started contacting me and asking me if my project can be impimented in them as well, so this year I'm going to be working with 3 different schools, which means more students, more hard work and more social impact. A few young people were prevented from drug abuse, since they confessed that their engagement in extracurricular activities helped them to keep themselves busy and stopped them from taking a very dangerous path. In addition to that, the student's educational level is taken to a whole other level according to their teachers! And last but not least, all participating youth became aware of several social issues, and their minds became critical; they started thinking about solving the problems, and representing the solutions via songs/dances/plays in comic or dramatic ways.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The vision of the next years is that this project that started as a small idea of creating a theatre club will become a nationally ( and even internationnaly) known organization that engages people worldide in artistic activities, organized national and international shows and competitions, and creates a better team with more qualified staff.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

I plan on applying for the MEPI grant. Since I am an Alumna of a MEPI exchange program, I will represent my idea and try to win the grant. Also, I have other plans like applying for other grants and asking the government to help.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In my city, there is only 1 other association whose interest is art, but they do not work with children not young people, but with young artists whose talents are already shown. My project is unique because it believes in young people and their abilities to stand out, and it doesn't need to see great results, what really matters is motivation and perseverance, not excellence. Not everybody was born talented, but Art was not made just for art, but also to address many issues, just like the ones I mentioned earlier.

Founding Story

I was about to apply to an exchange program, and one if the essay questions was: If you had the ability and power, what would you change about your community? I immediately thought about creating a theatre club in Oujda, because we don't have one! Since I was a kid, I have always wanted to have extracurricular activities where students get to compete and stand out, but now that I am grown up, I am trying to make this dream come true for the next generation. So I took the initiatve, applied to teach english as a volunteer in several school in order to get professional relations with children, and started my work!

Team

The team is composed of the designer ( the one in charge of the decoration, music, etc...) , the choreographer ( I do this as well), the computer guy ( he is ver talented with computers and technology, and helps us with virtual matters) and finally me, the organizer ( I am in charge of planning and organizing the events, my job consists of chosing the right activities, the host place, the participating students, the matters to be addressed, etc...)
