About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

According to the National Institute of Statistics, unemployment Rate in Cameroon remained unchanged at 3.80 percent in 2012 from 3.80 percent in 2011. Unemployment Rate in Cameroon averaged 4.40 percent from 2010 until 2012, reaching an all time high of 5.60 percent in 2010 and a record low of 3.80 percent in 2011. The most affected group remain the age group of 20 to 29 years, because they do not have access to academic counselors to assist them

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The solution to this lack of academic counselling is the creation of a website ,mobile application and SMS platform , all aimed at helping students identify their field of study , divulging all necessary information on those fields of study and follow up students to ensure they attain their objective or career. In line with this , partner with local secondary and higher institutions to make this academic counseling service accessible to students and also working with the government to make this platform available in public schools which have more student population needing this service because they are mostly left out when it comes to academic counseling.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Basically foubs orientation will provide academic counseling services to students through its an online, mobile application and SMS academic orientation platform. For example a final year high school student accessing the platform will be able through the questionnaire asked using the Holland code, to identify his future area of specialization at the level of the university, furthermore he or she will have access to information on pre-requisites or qualifications to do that specialty, which higher insitution or training center where he or she can do it. Furthermore he or she will be facilitated admission into the desired higher institution easily using the platform and on site support staff.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Foubs orientation will target students between the age group 15 to 22 years, which are more than 100,000 in the whole of Cameroon and more than 2000 in Buea. Less than 10 percent of these target group have access to academic counselors, and for the few who have access, follow up is very low. foubs orientation is coming in to make academic counseling accessible to a larger number of students and facilitate follow because students with their personal accounts on the platform will be supported individually. Through this platforms, more than 100,000 students will a able to have a clear view of what they want to do in high school, university , where to do it and the requirements . With this more students leaving the university will have done their real field of specialty and will be open to seeking for employment and entrepreneurship because they will be passionate about what they are doing.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

For this project to be successful, the online, mobile application and SMS academic counseling platform will have to be developed in due time. Furthermore to scale its use seminars and trainings on academic counseling will have to be organized in secondary and higher institutions in Buea and the whole of Cameroon to spread its use. Furthermore a movement of foubs ambassadors including students already doing a particular specialty and professionals in that specialty will be developed to talk to high school students on the class view and professional view of their specialty.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

This project will generate revenue through advertisement fee levied to higher institutions or schools who will advertise on the different foubs orientation platforms. Also through commission fee taken from students who will be facilitated admission in different schools or higher institutions. Furthermore from money collected from academic counseling training and workshop programs done in schools.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

As of now foubs orientation is the only online, mobile application and SMS platform offering academic counseling services in Cameroon and Central Africa
Team

Founding Story

The founder of the project in his transition from high school to the university faced a lot of challenge in choosing his specialty because he did not have access academic counselors to help him, and many of his friends faced the same challenge, but he was lucky to have his parents and elder brother who advised him, but most of his high school friends had a hard time in the university because no one advised them and they eventually made wrong choices. Looking at this, coming back from SUSI 2015 , he decided to develop a project to help students facing the same challenge, so that they will know what to do in the university , where and the information on requirements.

Team

The founder of the project Ioudom Foubi Jephte is a final year Bachelor of Science business management student at the Catholic University Institute of Buea, with business management and leadership skills acquired in class, internships and seminars especially during the Study of the United States Institute on Social Entrepreneurship 2015. Furthermore the chief technical officer Franklin Tchana is a programmer and web developer at the Catholic University Institute of Buea with experience in the area of web, mobile application and GSM platform. Moreover Jim Hill is an independent consultant for this project and he serves as academic counselor at the University of Connecticut. As the project goes along there will be need to recruit more web , GSM and mobile application platform developers. Also there will be need to constantly update information on the platforms through on field research. We project to partner with local secondary and higher institutions to encourage the use of our platforms, also with government organizations and international organizations working to ameliorate education and reduce unemployment.

My friend,

This application is great, and i love your enthusiasm to step up and look for solutions in your community. This journey is not easy and I want to encourage you to never give up, to keep trying until you are satisfied.

Here is my feedback, it might sound harsh but it is for the best.

Think of if you work on a 20 story building and you are with you an investor in that elevator, how would you pitch your idea? I loved how you mentioned the problem/pain in the beginning, but I would add references to the 15%, for instance: according to UNICEF, 15% of students etc. Also think of selling it better in a way that is engaging for instance instead of saying :That is why focus orientation, the first online and mobile academic counselling platform was created to solve it.” You can sell it better saying: Imagine if we could use the power of technology to connect young students in need with the best academic advisors. That is what we are planning to do.

What if:
This needs to be a little more powerful and when somebody reads it they will not say yes, but they would say how or that is amazing!
Problem:
Why is there unemployment, how bad is it (show some statistics)? Why don’t they have academic counselling? Focus more on the root causes of the problem, not just the surface.

Solution:
Think of how you are going to connect this with universities and other education institutions. Is there a way you can connect this with the government. I have a cool idea with you, if you would like to discuss it more please email me at mdida at ashoka.org

Example:
Cool!
Impact:
Check spelling. Think of also how much time students lose while looking for what they want to study, think of how many students drop out of university because they don’t know what they want to do. Also, when students find what they love to do they are more likely to be happier people .

Full impact potential:
Wonderful! Think of also Life Coaches instead just as academic advisors.
Sustainability:
Think of how to connect universities with majors that students pick. Universities would pay to get marketing to specific students. Also, think of how to extract some funds from the government and other funders.
Marketplace:
That is an advantage, but look how they currently do counseling and how online is going to be better than just in person.
The founding story:
This should be an inspiring story on why you are doing what you are doing? Why is this important to you, and where did you find the courage to take this journey.
Team:
Great! I would suggest you get more team members near you that can help you. Also think of finding some advisors how can help you.
