MHSEL aims at increasing the English language proficiency among high school students in Mali. The project will mentor them through English clubs that it is going to create in the different schools. The project is going to initiate competitions in English and provide easy access to English documents.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Low performance of High School English learners and absence of an atmosphere to practice their English. This leads to lower interest in the language and causes lower chances of getting a job (as English language is very important in the job market),

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Setting up English cubs in high schools; that aims at targeting English Learners and assisting (mentoring, organizing debates) them and uniting them to create an English atmosphere. Our activities would be book discussions in English, debates, quizzes and other activities which will broaden the student’s knowledge about the English language. Thus knowing more about the language will push them into learning more about the language.

Impact: How does it Work

Since the project is in partnership with the Mali English Club Council and other English Clubs in Mali, Members of these different English Clubs will volunteer to teach at the Sub- clubs that’ll be created in the High Schools and mentor the high school students by helping with different activities such as debates, conversations etc. that will be done in English and organize contests to encourage more students’ interest in English Language. We’ll collaborate with the teachers and English clubs will be inserted in the school’s extra-curricular activities. Activities will also be held on weekends at the different club of different school.

Seeing English as a Universal language, majority of Malian students aims at speaking good English but doesn’t have the access. Creating of English clubs at High schools will increase the proficiency of English speakers in high school and this will increase the rate of success of English students writing the baccalaureate exam. This will also Facilitate networking among people of interest in the language,

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Interconnecting the clubs in high schools with the different English clubs in Mali will create a great atmosphere of English language for English lovers and people will be able to chat in English in the streets. This will encourage more interest, participation and enhance good relationship among lovers of English language. This will also help the students to be more competitive in the job market (considering their English language as an advantage) once they are ready to get a job.

Partnering with NGO’s, Embassies (of USA; South Africa in Mali), RELO (Regional English Language Officer) and MATE (Malian Association of Teachers of English)

There are some clubs that are trying to combat the problem of Low level English proficiency of English speakers in Mali but the difference is that my project focuses only on high school students.

Founding Story

Mali is french speaking country so it is difficult for learners of english language to practice their english. As a chairperson of an english club which aims at helping english learners to better their english, I have met a lot of students who underline the cause of their poor english proficiency as a lack of an atmosphere where they could practice their english. I believe that if english clubs can be set up in high schools, students learning english language will have a strong basic level by the time they go to college.

Team

The team comprises of Volunteers from different English clubs in Mali. These volunteers are partly University English Students and partly high school English teachers.

Remember to describe your dreams and project in as much detail as possible. Think of convincing people why this is important and how do you know so.

Below are my comments and they might sound harsh but with good intentions.

An Elevator pitch reflects the idea that it should be possible to deliver the summary in the time span of an elevator ride, or approximately thirty seconds to two minutes. Think of if you work on a 20 story building and you are with you an investor in that elevator, how would you pitch your idea? If you told me “We want to open clubs to help students learn more English.”, I would say yes that sounds good and that is it. You want to sell your idea/solution to him! The best way to do this is to start with the pain/problem. For instance,” did you know that 85% of the people don’t vote? That results into serious issues because people are not being represented. Therefore, I’ve created this new way to making voting very fast and effective.”
What if:
Think of making this more exciting and inspiring. What if all kinds in Mali could speak English for instance? Something that has meaning if it happens.

Problem:
There are some questions that can help you articulate the problem better.
How do you know this is the issue? Why is low performance a bad thing and how does it affect society? Find some statistics and references. Think of the Root Cause of the problem. For instance: If you say that our solution is to help feed homeless people you are forgetting to address why the homeless people are homeless in the first place. That is the root cause of the problem.

Solution:
How are you going to do all of those? What kind of program? Why did you think this is the best way to tackle this issue? Be Specific not just saying establishing clubs. Why clubs? Why do you think that is the best solution?
Example:
How is the example helping you solving the problem? How does the problem work? How are you going to be part of the part time academic program?
Impact:
How do you define success? How are you going to measure that (whether you did it or not)?
Full Impact Potential:
Think of specific large partners that you would potentially like to work with? Think of how are you going to scale this idea into other cities and countries?
Sustainability:
I like that you are charging participants, think of also charging sponsors of the event, marketing and so on.
Marketplace:
Think of really analyzing what others are doing because that is what we want to see. And then also write more on what makes you special and different from them.

Team:
The most important part of this application is the team. We believe that you need to inspire others to be part of the team, and then together with them make a difference. The team members should be all people who believe in the vision that you all design together.

I think, it's very important today to invest in high school in all towns in the world...everybody must have the choice to learn and increase skills in his domain...(excuse me for my english language )
