About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Here in Tunisia, unfortunately , there is an epidemic of teachers using their jobs to force kids to pay for tutoring. It is creating unfair ground for children to learn. Since, only privileged children from wealthy families can afford it; thus, leaving poor children in the dark. Unemployment rates are high among youth with a college degree. they can not find jobs which makes them prone to join extremist groups or become illegal immigrants.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

why not hire unemployed youth to fill in the gap? Working as tutors, will take the leverage out of opportunist teachers. They will have a purpose. They will help their own community; the children of their neighbors and of their old school. In exchange, they will have some pocket money and they will get to interact with hopeful and smart children. It is a temporary job that will help ground them. In addition, they will have experience. Children will be taught by qualified college graduates who are sharp and motivated. There is no discrimination. All children are qualified to have a tutor to help them through school and it will make it easier for public teachers to motivat their students and bring out the best in them.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In primary school , French and English are taught in the third and the fourth grade. It is challenging for kids to learn the skills necessary to learn both languages. Unfortunately, teachers in my school used this to force kids to pay for private tutoring. They will hold information and only give it to the students who are able to pay. It was expensive for the majority of children to pay for the tutoring. Thus, they were disadvantaged. In fact, the teachers will sometimes give the privileged kids exercises similar to the exam. they would excel while others will fail. In such young age, it is cruel for children to be taught that money can buy you education. they will grow to resent learning languages.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

If this project becomes a reality. It will lower pressure on families to pay for such lessons. It will make it easier for children to learn and love learning. It will provide unemployed graduates with a purpose and a motive. The project will create stronger community ties since it is based on an equilibrium. It will make teachers' jobs easier. In fact, they will have classrooms of well prepared students. The tutoring center will ground youth in the community and prevent them from getting involved with shady parties. The center delivers lessons in all fields and it will help maintain a mentoring relationship with the tutors and the students. Moreover, it will prepare this category of young men and women to enter the work field and it will help them acquire a much needed experience.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The center will be based in a school. When the project is running successfully for specified period. Another center will open in another school in the same community. both centers will be connected via a network: Facebook group and eventually a website. there will be an exchange of resources between the tutors of both centers. The project will reach out to local graduates who are interested in giving back to their community and might be reimbursed with a small stipend. Eventually, the goal is to create a connecting network of tutoring centers in all the schools in one community.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The stipend offered to the tutors will be a fraction of what the government is paying for teachers to provide extra hours. NGO who help children and family will be approached to sponsor the project. Devoted parents could donate a small amount to secure an excellent services that will help their kids get quality education.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Private schools and private tutors are addressing this problem. However, they are more expensive and they are in it for the profit rather than the interest of the children. And by paying for this service that amount of money, the problem is not fixed since it is turning the children into a leverage to make money. The private school will have its own teachers tutoring, the same teachers that are setting the national exams. A qualified outsider is a more efficient solution. There is private tutors like college students. This lacks the belonging to a network of tutors offering support.

Founding Story

My cousin was failing his french exams. Although, he was ahead of his peers since he was taught french since kindergarten. When my uncle went to meet his teacher to know the reason. She hinted that he will do much better if he joins her home tutoring sessions. My uncle felt it was a sort of blackmail. So he took it upon himself to teach my cousin. Yet, he failed again and the teacher proposed the same solution saying that most of his classmates do the same thing. My uncle infuriated by the situation and his son's misery and resent for a language he used to love , made him enroll him in a private school. When he was telling this story, I thought a neutral party is the key to prevent the issue
