Project Stage

Idea (We’re hoping to get started in the future)

Founding Story: What was the spark that led you to start your project? What was the "Aha!" moment that led you to get started and see the potential for this to succeed?

My idea started with thinking about how hard some families work just to keep a roof over their heads. I began wondering why so many families can work, save money, and do their best financially but still struggle to afford a home of their own. My “Aha!” moment was realizing that some families might already have money saved for a down payment but are still unable to purchase a home because they need additional financial assistance, have credit challenges, or simply don’t know what resources are available. I started thinking, what if there was a way to help those families get closer to owning their first home instead of constantly worrying about paying rent? That’s when I came up with Keys to Our Future. I know I’m only 13, and I can’t solve everyone’s problems, but I believe I can start something meaningful. I want to bring people and resources together, help families understand their options, and eventually create opportunities for families who just need a little extra help to open the door to a home of their own.

The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve? Why does it matter to you and your community?

One problem I want to help solve is how difficult it can be for low-income families to purchase their first home. Many families work hard, pay their bills, raise their children, and try to save money, but homeownership still feels out of reach. Between high housing costs, down payments, closing costs, credit challenges, and not knowing what assistance programs are available, families can find themselves stuck renting year after year. I think this matters because paying rent helps provide a place to live, but it doesn’t give families the same opportunity to build equity and ownership in something of their own. I believe families should have a chance to create stability and something they can eventually pass down to their children. This matters to my community because having more families with opportunities to become homeowners can help create stronger, more financially stable communities. I don’t think someone should have to be wealthy to have a chance at owning a home. Through Keys to Our Future, I want to help families find resources, learn about homeownership opportunities, and overcome some of the financial barriers standing between them and their first home. My goal is to help turn homeownership from something families only dream about into something they have a real opportunity to achieve.

Your Solution: How are you solving this problem? Share your specific solution.

Through Keys to Our Future, I want to create a community initiative that helps low-income families get closer to purchasing their first home. My solution is to connect families with the information, resources, and financial support they need to overcome some of the barriers to homeownership. I plan to start by learning directly from families in my community about what makes buying a home difficult for them. I want to create simple resource guides that explain first-time homebuyer programs, down-payment assistance, credit education, and free housing counseling services. I also want to connect with local housing organizations, real estate professionals, mortgage lenders, and community businesses that may be willing to share their knowledge, volunteer their time, or support the project. With the initial grant money, I would begin creating and distributing educational materials, conducting community outreach, and building relationships with organizations that already help first-time buyers. My bigger goal is to grow Keys to Our Future into a community-supported assistance fund. This fund could eventually help qualified first-time homebuyers cover some of the remaining down-payment or closing costs they cannot afford on their own. Families would still need to meet the appropriate lending and assistance program requirements, but I want to help close the financial gap that keeps so many people from reaching their goal. I know this won’t happen overnight, but I believe starting with education, connections, and community support can create something that grows over time. I want Keys to Our Future to help families move one step closer to having a home they can call their own.

Impact: How has your project created impact / made a difference so far? Or, if at an early stage, what will impact look like?

Keys to Our Future is still in its early stages, so I haven’t helped families purchase homes yet. My impact starts with turning an idea into something that can make a difference in my community. My first goal is to reach at least 20 families by sharing information about first-time homebuyer programs, down-payment assistance, credit education, and housing counseling. I also want to connect with at least 3 local organizations or professionals who can help families understand their options. I will measure my progress by the number of families reached, resource guides shared, partnerships created, and families connected with helpful resources. My bigger goal is to eventually help qualified families who have already saved toward their first home but need additional support with down payments or closing costs. Even helping one family get closer to owning a home would mean a lot to me. I believe people don’t always need someone to solve every problem for them. Sometimes they just need the right information, resources, and an opportunity to take the next step. I want Keys to Our Future to continue helping families long after this grant is gone, creating opportunities today that can benefit future generations.

Your Innovation: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there? How is your project new or innovative?

What makes Keys to Our Future different is that I want to focus on families who are already trying to help themselves but still need a little extra support to become homeowners. There are already programs that offer homebuyer education, credit counseling, and down-payment assistance. However, not every family knows these programs exist, understands how to apply, or qualifies for the assistance available. I want to help make those resources easier to find and understand. My idea is to bring education, community connections, and financial assistance together into one initiative. Instead of only telling families where to go, I want to help them understand their options and connect them with the organizations and professionals who can guide them through the process. What I hope makes this project especially different is the long-term goal of creating a community-supported fund that could help qualified first-time buyers cover some of the remaining costs of purchasing a home. I want to explore ways local businesses, real estate professionals, and community members can work together to support families who have already made an effort to save but still have a financial gap. I also believe having a young person lead this effort brings a different perspective. I’m growing up in a generation that will eventually face these same challenges, and I want to start learning how to solve community problems now instead of waiting until I’m an adult. Keys to Our Future isn’t about reinventing homeownership programs. It’s about bringing existing resources and people together in a new way, with the goal of making homeownership more accessible to families who might otherwise believe it is out of reach.

How many people are on your team?

Your team: What role(s) do your team members play? How do you share leadership with them?

Our team currently has three members: me, my mom, and my dad. I am the founder and lead the vision for Keys to Our Future. My parents help guide me, share ideas, and connect me with community resources and professionals. We work together, but I make the decisions about what I want this project to accomplish. As the project grows, I hope to welcome other students, housing professionals, and community members who share my goal of helping families become homeowners.

What’s Next: What are the next steps you plan to take to grow or strengthen your project over the next year? If your project is still in the idea stage, describe the steps you will take over the next three months to launch or begin developing it.

Over the next three months, my goal is to turn Keys to Our Future from an idea into an active community project. My first step is to research local first-time homebuyer programs and learn more about the challenges families face when trying to purchase a home. I want to connect with at least three local organizations or housing professionals who can help me understand the process and guide families toward available resources. I also plan to create a simple resource guide explaining down-payment assistance, credit education, housing counseling, and other homebuyer programs. I want to begin sharing this information with families in my community, with a goal of reaching at least 20 households. As the project grows, I hope to bring other students and community members onto the team. I also want to explore partnerships with local businesses and housing professionals to eventually build a community-supported fund for qualified first-time buyers who need help with down payments or closing costs. My goal is to learn, build connections, and take real steps toward making homeownership more accessible for families. I know it won’t happen overnight, but every step forward matters.

How do you encourage other people to join your project or learn about the problem you’re working on? If you have a new idea, tell us how you will do this in the future.

Since Keys to Our Future is still a new idea, I haven’t started reaching out to the community yet. So far, I have shared my idea with my mom and dad, who are helping me think through how to get started. As I begin developing the project, I plan to encourage others to get involved by talking to families about the challenges of buying a first home and sharing information about resources that may help. I want to create simple flyers and resource guides that explain why homeownership can be difficult for some families and what programs may be available to them. I also plan to reach out to local housing organizations, real estate professionals, community businesses, and other students who may want to support the idea. I hope to invite people to share their knowledge, help spread awareness, and connect families with useful resources. My goal is to build a team of people who believe that families deserve a fair opportunity to become homeowners. I want others to see that even a small contribution, whether it’s sharing information, volunteering, or making a connection, can help move this project forward. I may be starting with just my family, but I hope Keys to Our Future will grow into something the whole community can be part of.
