Project Category
My project is a brand new / emerging idea
Project Stage
Pilot-Stage (We’ve tried an activity or two)
Founding Story: What was the spark that led you to start your project? What was the "Aha!" moment that led you to get started and see the potential for this to succeed?
The apiary project that began last year had materialized with the colonies expanding and more hives were introduced. In order to ensure food security is enhanced and ecosystem is self sustaining.I took the avocado peels disposed after meals to provide seedling containers which are biodegradable while at the same time promoting growth of beans and maize seedlings that will be transplanted next to the apiary site to provide pollen and nectar for the bees.I took a research to identify how much waste was generated after meals from the discarded 370 avocado peels in a day, making it 2590 in a week then compound to 10360 in a term.
The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve? Why does it matter to you and your community?
Biodiversity losses in the school setup
Your Solution: How are you solving this problem? Share your specific solution.
Biopeels reuse will improve the aesthetic of the school compound. It will increase soil fertility when the decompose and give instant nutrients to the seedlings The agriculture learners will see precision irrigation of seedlings even in dry conditions. The bees will get pollen and nectar while pollinating the ecosystem therefore conserving it. The honey harvested and other by products will be used by the school to train on value addition.
Impact: How has your project created impact / made a difference so far? Or, if at an early stage, what will impact look like?
The seedlings are growing quite well. The initiative has attracted my classmates who are eager to spread the use of avocado peels at their homes influencing urban farming.
Your Innovation: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there? How is your project new or innovative?
The innovation highly scalable in high schools, stands out in it's roll out in the arid and semi arids areas. The project has remained in tune with nature by organically appreciating thenatural process
How many people are on your team?
5
Your team: What role(s) do your team members play? How do you share leadership with them?
The team is inclusive tapping the curiosity of Person Abled Differently who encouraged other students to give regenerative agriculture a new twist. The member to dig soil while another fetches water The group has a leader to marshal the team
What’s Next: What are the next steps you plan to take to grow or strengthen your project over the next year? If your project is still in the idea stage, describe the steps you will take over the next three months to launch or begin developing it.
To capacity build existing students clubs in the school on eco conservation. Honey harvested sold to prospecting buyers. Increase the number of bee hives from five To look avenues to share our greening community experience
How do you encourage other people to join your project or learn about the problem you’re working on? If you have a new idea, tell us how you will do this in the future.
The initiative has attracted grade 10 learners who are eager to learn green skills. Close to 20 students have shown interest and teachers likewise fascinated by it.In the link provided you will find a demonstration to other students in my global citizenship internship demonstrating on the infinity flight done by scout bee to communicate they have located a new habitat.
