Founding Story: What was the spark that led you to start your project? What was the "Aha!" moment that led you to get started and see the potential for this to succeed?
The idea for Smart Farm for Smallholder Farmers came from seeing how difficult farming has become for many smallholder farmers. Farmers work hard to produce food, yet changing rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, declining soil fertility, pests, high input costs, and limited access to reliable information can make each farming season increasingly uncertain. What changed my perspective was realizing that farmers do not simply need more encouragement to farm—they need practical, affordable tools and knowledge that help them adapt to a changing climate. I began thinking about how climate-smart agriculture could be made more accessible to ordinary smallholder farmers, especially those who cannot afford expensive technologies or specialized services. I saw an opportunity to connect simple, proven practices such as water conservation, improved soil management, crop diversification, efficient irrigation, composting, improved seeds, and better farm planning with farmer education and peer learning. That became the foundation of Smart Farm for Smallholder Farmers: a community-focused approach that helps farmers become more productive and resilient while protecting the resources their farms depend on.
The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve? Why does it matter to you and your community?
Smallholder farmers are facing increasing pressure from climate change and other challenges affecting agricultural production. Unpredictable rainfall, drought and heat, soil degradation, pests, water scarcity, and rising input costs can reduce yields and make farming livelihoods increasingly uncertain. These challenges matter because smallholder farmers play an important role in feeding their communities and supporting household incomes. When production falls, families can face reduced income, higher food costs, and greater vulnerability. Many farmers also have limited access to practical information about climate-smart practices and technologies. Solutions may exist, but they are not always affordable, accessible, or adapted to local conditions. Smart Farm for Smallholder Farmers aims to close this gap. We believe farmers should not have to choose between increasing production and protecting the environment. They need approaches that allow them to improve productivity while using water, soil, and other natural resources more sustainably.

Smart Farm for Smallholder Farmers provides practical, locally appropriate support to help farmers adapt to climate change while improving productivity and livelihoods. The project will combine farmer training, demonstration plots, peer learning, and access to climate-smart agricultural practices. Farmers will learn techniques such as improved soil management, composting and organic matter management, mulching, crop diversification, water conservation, efficient irrigation, improved planting practices, integrated pest management, and the use of climate-resilient crops where appropriate. We will establish demonstration farms where farmers can see climate-smart practices working in real conditions rather than only hearing about them in a classroom. Farmers will be encouraged to test suitable practices on their own farms and share their experiences with others. The project will also connect farmers with relevant agricultural experts, input suppliers, markets, financial opportunities, and other partners where possible. Simple monitoring will help us understand which practices improve yields, reduce costs, conserve resources, and strengthen farmers' resilience. Our approach is designed to be practical and affordable. Instead of promoting solutions that require farmers to make large investments, we focus on knowledge, locally available resources, appropriate technologies, and practices that farmers can gradually adopt and adapt to their own circumstances.
Impact: How has your project created impact / made a difference so far? Or, if at an early stage, what will impact look like?
The project's intended impact is to help smallholder farmers become more productive, climate-resilient, and economically secure. In the first phase, we aim to engage [NUMBER] farmers, establish [NUMBER] demonstration farms, and train participants in practical climate-smart agricultural practices. We will track indicators such as farmers trained, farms adopting new practices, crop yields, production costs, water use, soil-management practices, and household income where feasible. We also expect farmers to share what they learn with other members of their communities, creating a multiplier effect beyond the people directly involved in the project. Over time, we aim to see farmers become less vulnerable to climate-related shocks, improve the efficiency of their farms, strengthen food production, and increase the stability of their livelihoods. The most important impact will be farmers having greater confidence and ability to make informed decisions about their farms in a changing climate. Rather than simply receiving assistance, they will gain knowledge and tools that they can continue using and sharing.
Your Innovation: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there? How is your project new or innovative?
Smart Farm for Smallholder Farmers is different because it treats climate adaptation, agricultural productivity, and farmer livelihoods as one connected challenge. Many agricultural interventions focus mainly on increasing yields, while climate initiatives may focus primarily on environmental protection. Our approach brings both together and asks a practical question: how can farmers produce more reliably while using natural resources more sustainably? We also emphasize demonstration and peer learning. Instead of expecting farmers to adopt unfamiliar practices based only on training sessions, we create opportunities for them to see, test, compare, and discuss practices in real farming conditions. Another important part of our approach is affordability. We prioritize climate-smart practices and technologies that can be adapted to the realities of smallholder farmers rather than assuming that farmers have access to expensive equipment or large amounts of capital. Farmers are also treated as partners and knowledge holders. Their local experience helps shape which solutions are tested and adapted. Successful farmers can become peer educators, allowing knowledge to move from farmer to farmer. In this way, the project is not simply delivering agricultural information. It is building a community-based system for learning, experimentation, adaptation, and shared problem-solving.

Our team currently consists of 30 people, including the founder. Responsibilities are shared across project coordination, farmer engagement, agricultural training, communications, monitoring, and partnerships. Team members contribute ideas and take leadership of activities according to their skills and experience. As the project grows, we plan to involve more farmers, agricultural professionals, youth volunteers, community leaders, and technical partners so that leadership remains collabor
What’s Next: What are the next steps you plan to take to grow or strengthen your project over the next year? If your project is still in the idea stage, describe the steps you will take over the next three months to launch or begin developing it.
Over the next year, we will focus on testing, strengthening, and expanding the Smart Farm for Smallholder Farmers model. First, we will identify and engage smallholder farmers and establish demonstration farms where climate-smart practices can be tested in local conditions. We will develop practical training sessions covering soil health, water management, climate-resilient production, crop diversification, pest management, and other relevant practices. We will build partnerships with agricultural extension professionals, research institutions, farmer organizations, input providers, markets, community organizations, and other stakeholders who can contribute knowledge or resources. We will also establish a simple monitoring system to measure farmer participation, adoption of practices, productivity, resource efficiency, and livelihood outcomes. The results will help us improve the model and identify the practices that create the greatest value for farmers. Our goal is to develop a practical model that can be replicated in additional farming communities and eventually reach a much larger number of smallholder farmers.

We encourage participation by making climate-smart agriculture practical, visible, and relevant to farmers' everyday challenges. Rather than communicating climate change only as a large global issue, we connect it to issues farmers already experience, such as changing rainfall, declining soil fertility, pests, water shortages, and production costs. We will use farmer meetings, demonstration farms, community outreach, peer-to-peer learning, local networks, and social media to share information and invite people to participate. Farmers who successfully test new practices will be encouraged to share their experiences with other farmers and become peer champions. This creates a model where participants are not only beneficiaries but also educators and leaders. We will also engage agricultural professionals, community leaders, youth, farmer associations, schools, and potential partners to expand awareness and participation. Our goal is to build a growing community of farmers and supporters who understand that climate-smart agriculture is not only about adapting to climate change—it is about creating stronger, more productive, and more sustainable farming communities.
