Idea (We’re hoping to get started in the future)

Founding Story: What was the spark that led you to start your project? What was the "Aha!" moment that led you to get started and see the potential for this to succeed?

RAISE UBUNTU was inspired by seeing how poverty and limited academic support affect learners in my community. Many struggle with Mathematics and Physics, gradually losing confidence in their abilities and dreams. Some families want to help but lack the educational resources or knowledge to do so.My “aha!” moment was realising that a learner’s circumstances should never determine their potential. Change does not always require a big organisation or expensive resources; sometimes, it begins with one person willing to make a difference. Through RAISE UBUNTU, I aim to start small by providing free Mathematics and Physics tutoring, mentorship and encouragement to three to five learners during school holidays. My vision is to help learners rebuild their confidence, improve academically and discover that their futures hold possibilities beyond their present circumstances. I believe that when we uplift one learner, we plant a seed of change that can grow throughout the community. SouthAfrica's poverty rate is huge,so by doing this I'll help because education is the key to many opportunities in life. Mostly the cause of the high poverty rate is because of the number of unemployed youth, due to lack of qualifications as mostly of them in my community drop out as they lose hope as they are academically not strong. Education don't just open door, it also change the way you see the world.

The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve? Why does it matter to you and your community?

Many learners in my community face challenges in Mathematics and Physics due to limited access to extra academic support and learning resources. Poverty can make private tutoring unaffordable, while some parents and caregivers may not have the educational background needed to assist with difficult schoolwork, despite wanting their children to succeed.Without adequate support, learners may fall behind academically, lose confidence and begin doubting their potential. This concerns me because a learner’s financial circumstances should never determine the opportunities available to them. This is the problem I hope to address through RAISE UBUNTU, a proposed initiative that aims to provide free Mathematics and Physics tutoring, mentorship and encouragement to learners who need additional support. I plan to begin with three to five learners during school holidays, monitor their progress and provide extra sessions for those who need them.My goal is to create an opportunity for learners to strengthen their academic skills, rebuild their confidence and recognise the possibilities education can offer. By doing this, i am not only supporting the learners academically but im also building the foundation of success in their future as education is the supreme key to success. This will bring a positive impact to community as the upcoming learners will have role models to up to in the future.

Your Solution: How are you solving this problem? Share your specific solution.

RAISE UBUNTU aims to address limited access to academic support by providing free Mathematics and Physics tutoring, mentorship and encouragement to learners in underprivileged communities.I plan to start with three to five learners during school holidays, holding sessions at my home with permission and supervision from a trusted adult. Sessions will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with extra support for learners who are truly in need.My teaching approach will focus on understanding rather than memorisation. Instead of simply teaching learners to remember formulas, I want them to understand what they mean, why they work, where they come from and how to apply them to unfamiliar problems. Through practical examples, guided exercises and critical-thinking questions, I aim to develop independent problem-solvers who can think outside the box.RAISE UBUNTU will also focus on building confidence by creating a supportive environment where learners can ask questions, learn from mistakes and develop a positive attitude towards challenging subjects. To measure progress, I plan to record attendance, assess learners' understanding before and after tutoring, monitor their development and gather feedback. This will help me identify areas for improvement and adapt my teaching methods. I will use available resources and any funding responsibly to obtain essential learning materials, such as stationery and worksheets, and also have some snacks for the learners during the breaks in between so they can not lose concentration . My goal is to begin small, strengthen the programme through experience and eventually reach more learners. Through RAISE UBUNTU, I hope to make academic support more accessible and help learners recognise their potential. I wo

Impact: How has your project created impact / made a difference so far? Or, if at an early stage, what will impact look like?

RAISE UBUNTU is currently at the idea stage, so I have not yet reached any learners through the project. However, I hope to begin by supporting three to five learners in my community who have limited access to extra academic assistance. My goal is to help learners improve their understanding of Mathematics and Physics, develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and gain confidence in their abilities. I want them to move beyond memorising formulas to understanding concepts and applying their knowledge independently. I plan to measure impact through attendance records, assessments before and after tutoring, progress tracking and learner feedback. These will help me evaluate improvements and identify where learners need additional support. I believe RAISE UBUNTU can make a difference because it will provide free, personalised academic support in a supportive learning environment. By starting small, using available resources and responding to learners' individual needs, I hope to build a strong foundation for growth. My long-term vision is to reach more learners and help create a community where financial circumstances do not limit educational opportunities. For me, success means not only better academic performance, but also learners who believe in themselves and their potential.

Your Innovation: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there? How is your project new or innovative?

RAISE UBUNTU aims to make academic support accessible to learners who cannot afford private tutoring. While other tutoring programmes exist, my approach focuses on combining free Mathematics and Physics lessons with critical thinking, deep understanding and confidence-building. My teaching philosophy is to help learners understand rather than simply memorise. I want them to know what a formula means, why it works, where it comes from and how to apply it to unfamiliar problems. Through practical examples, guided problem-solving and thought-provoking questions, I aim to develop independent thinkers who can reason, make connections and think outside the box. RAISE UBUNTU will begin with three to five learners, allowing me to identify individual difficulties, adapt explanations and provide extra support where needed. I also want to create a welcoming environment where learners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning without embarrassment. Another important feature is the combination of academic support with mentorship and encouragement. I believe learners need both knowledge and confidence to tackle difficult challenges. Although RAISE UBUNTU is still at the planning stage, I intend to monitor progress through assessments, problem-solving exercises and learner feedback. This will help me improve the programme based on learners' needs. RAISE UBUNTU's innovation lies in bringing accessible community-based tutoring together with understanding-focused teaching and personal encouragement. My vision is to help learners move beyond memorising formulas to understanding concepts, solving unfamiliar problems independently and recognising that their circumstances do not define their potential.

How many people are on your team?

Your team: What role(s) do your team members play? How do you share leadership with them?

RAISE UBUNTU's proposed team has three members. I will lead the project and tutor learners in Mathematics and Physics. My mother will provide adult supervision and guidance with organisation, budgeting and learner safety. My 11-year-old brother will help organise learning materials and support younger learners with schoolwork he understands. As the project grows, I hope to train learners who master concepts to become peer tutors. We will work together towards making education more accessible.

What’s Next: What are the next steps you plan to take to grow or strengthen your project over the next year? If your project is still in the idea stage, describe the steps you will take over the next three months to launch or begin developing it.

Over the next three months, I plan to develop RAISE UBUNTU from an idea into a community tutoring initiative. My first goal is to prepare activities for three to five learners, including Maths problem-solving challenges, simple Physics experiments, real-life calculations, quizzes and peer-learning exercises. These activities will encourage learners to understand concepts, think critically and gain confidence. I plan to organise a learning schedule for school holidays, with proposed sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. I will also identify the educational resources needed, such as textbooks, stationery and worksheets, and explore ways to obtain them. With guidance from my mentor, I hope to improve my planning, learn how to overcome challenges and make responsible decisions. I also plan to explore partnerships with educators and community organisations that could support the initiative. Before expanding, I want to establish a practical plan for monitoring learners' progress through exercises, assessments and feedback. These steps will help me prepare for the launch, learn from the initial experience and build a strong foundation for eventually reaching more learners.

How do you encourage other people to join your project or learn about the problem you’re working on? If you have a new idea, tell us how you will do this in the future.

RAISE UBUNTU is still in the planning stage, so I have not yet formally engaged learners through the project. My mother and younger brother are part of my proposed support team, contributing adult supervision, organisation and age-appropriate peer support. Once launched, I plan to raise awareness by speaking to learners, parents and community members about how limited academic support affects educational opportunities. I will promote free Mathematics and Physics tutoring through word of mouth, school networks and community groups, with the necessary permissions. I hope to involve teachers, volunteers and other young people who share my vision. As the project grows, learners who master concepts could become peer tutors, helping others understand difficult topics while developing leadership and communication skills. This would create a cycle of learning where those who receive support eventually support others. I want to show my community that changemaking does not require wealth or a large organisation; it can begin with sharing our knowledge and helping one another. Although I have not yet engaged participants, I hope to inspire others to join me in making quality academic support more accessible and helping learners realise their potential. By starting small and working together, we can build a community where learners encourage one another to succeed.
