Scaling (We’re expanding impact to new locations or in new and innovative ways)

Founding Story: What was the spark that led you to start your project? What was the "Aha!" moment that led you to get started and see the potential for this to succeed?

My journey began young, volunteering with a local organization, packing meals for the homeless. Throughout this time, I continued thinking about how people without homes could eat those meals comfortably. I remembered how painful even a small toothache had felt for me, and I had a dentist, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and parents who could get me care. I began wondering what that pain must feel like for someone without the same access. That was the moment oral health stopped feeling small and started feeling like a basic need I could help address. My ideas became the foundation of Seva for Smiles. I received toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss donations while also finding simple picture based educational materials so people could not only receive supplies, but learn how to care for their teeth. My first distribution was with Free Meals on Wheels, the place that inspired the idea. Since then, I've built partnerships across California and beyond, secured over $4,200 in donated supplies, contributed kits to a hospital backpack drive for children, partnered with a lung cancer awareness organization in New York, and distributed fluoride rinse with oral-health education to mothers at a community event. In fact, speaking with those mothers, hearing their gratitude, and seeing how much they valued the information I could share made me know that Seva for Smiles was worth growing.

The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve? Why does it matter to you and your community?

Most of us don’t have to worry about our oral health. We are provided with a dentist, hygiene supplies, and basic care to prevent discomfort in our mouths. But what happens to the many people around the world who do not have simple necessities at their disposal, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, not to mention basic information on how to care for their teeth? I believe everyone should have the right to access simple preventive care. Many of the consequences people face could have been avoided, yet they can develop into pain, infections, or costly dental treatments that families may never be able to afford. I feel strongly about this issue because oral health problems affect billions of people worldwide, yet so many are preventable. Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood, and its effects go far beyond the mouth. Dental pain can make it difficult for someone to eat, sleep, focus in school, or simply feel comfortable throughout the day. What makes this project so much more valuable is the fact that something as simple as having a toothbrush, toothpaste, and knowing how to use them properly can help prevent extreme problems before they become much larger.

Your Solution: How are you solving this problem? Share your specific solution.

The solution is to make preventive oral care accessible before small problems become extremely painful and expensive. This means giving anyone access to basic supplies like toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and fluoride products. We also want to providing simple, visual educational guides in multiple languages so people can understand how to care for their teeth regardless of age or language barriers. In the future, we want the solution to include free oral health screenings and connections to affordable follow up care through insurance or local resources. This would allow us to create a pathway from prevention to treatment instead of stopping at supplies alone. This can be done through partnerships with local organizations while also highlighting insurance options and other resources that can make dental care more accessible. Seva for Smiles can grow into such a beneficial project and is an affordable way to solve a problem that occurs in all ages.

Impact: How has your project created impact / made a difference so far? Or, if at an early stage, what will impact look like?

So far, Seva for Smiles has grown through partnerships and community connections that have helped secure about $4,200 worth of donated oral health supplies. Our kits have also been included in a backpack drive for children alongside former NBA player Adonal Foyle, helping provide basic necessities to young kids in need. Seva for smiles formed a partnership with a lung cancer awareness organization in New York, where oral-hygiene kits were used to encourage individuals to participate in important health screenings and care. Additionally, Seva for Smiles attended a community event for mothers, where we distributed more than 30 bottles of fluoride rinse and shared early oral-health information to help families begin preventive care from a young age. Participants also completed feedback forms so we could better understand their needs and continue improving the project. Seva for Smiles has also led 4+ distributions in underserved communities in California. Lastly, Seva for Smiles connected with local student groups, including a calligraphy club that is creating encouraging handwritten cards to place inside the kits. These partnerships have allowed Seva for Smiles to become more than a distribution project and grow into a community effort.

Your Innovation: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there? How is your project new or innovative?

Seva for Smiles is different because it does more than simply hand out hygiene supplies. Each kit is paired with clear, educational materials that teach people how to properly care for their teeth. We also don't just make the kits, we attend community events and fairs where we can have firsthand experience talking to the people receiving our supplies and make sure they know about preventative care. We always make sure to include visual guides and resources that can be offered in multiple languages. Additionally we are currently launching a new collaboration with a local group that will help us include encouraging handwritten cards so recipients feel supported, not just served. Another unique part of this project is how we incorporate different students into the mission. We are starting to spread the project into collaborations with multiple high school clubs. Each club contributes their own skills, such as creating cards, helping with outreach, or supporting kit preparation. This makes Seva for Smiles both an oral health initiative and a way to build a larger connection of service within schools and communities.

How many people are on your team?

Your team: What role(s) do your team members play? How do you share leadership with them?

At this stage, I am the main contributor of Seva for Smiles. However, this project has grown through collaboration with other students and community members who contribute their own ideas and skills. As I begin connecting with school clubs, students are also taking ownership of specific parts of the project, such as creating encouraging cards for kits and helping with outreach and service activities. In the future I hope to create more elaborate board with various students sharing their idea.

What’s Next: What are the next steps you plan to take to grow or strengthen your project over the next year? If your project is still in the idea stage, describe the steps you will take over the next three months to launch or begin developing it.

Over the next year, I want to grow Seva for Smiles beyond just providing supplies education, and connecting various school clubs. One of my biggest goals is to work with local dentists and dental professionals to offer free oral health screenings at community events. This would help people understand if they may need further care and also give them information about insurance or local resources that could make treatment more affordable. I also want to continue expanding our educational materials into more languages, build stronger partnerships with schools and community organizations, and involve more students in creating kits, cards, and outreach materials. My goal is to make Seva for Smiles something that can support people before dental problems become more painful or expensive.

How do you encourage other people to join your project or learn about the problem you’re working on? If you have a new idea, tell us how you will do this in the future.

I encourage people to join Seva for Smiles by making it easy for them to contribute in ways that match their interests. I have started reaching out to school clubs and other students to help create encouraging cards and share ideas for future events. I also use community events and partnerships as a chance to explain why oral health matters and how simple habits can prevent bigger problems later. In the future, I want to involve even more students, schools, and I hope to start multiple chapters around the nation. Additionally, I am working towards creating a Seva for Smiles leadership board that gives students and opportunity to share their ideas and help Seva for Smiles grow.
