Project Stage

Pilot-Stage (We’ve tried an activity or two)

Founding Story: What was the spark that led you to start your project? What was the "Aha!" moment that led you to get started and see the potential for this to succeed?

When I was younger, I noticed that many students thought science was difficult, intimidating, or only for “smart kids.” At the same time, I learned that children become much more engaged when they can imagine themselves in a role rather than simply listen to information. My “aha” moment came when I saw how role-playing can make learning exciting and personal. Instead of teaching science only through lectures or worksheets, I realized children could become scientists, engineers, inventors, and problem-solvers themselves. This inspired me to create STEM RolePlay Lab, a program that combines hands-on STEM learning with imaginative role-play. My goal is to help students develop curiosity, confidence, creativity, and leadership while showing them that science is something they can actively participate in, not just study from a textbook.

The Problem: What problem are you helping to solve? Why does it matter to you and your community?

Many young people, especially those who have limited exposure to STEM opportunities, view science and engineering as difficult, abstract, or unrelated to their daily lives. Traditional STEM education often focuses on facts and concepts but may not give students enough opportunity to see themselves as innovators and problem-solvers. As a result, some students lose interest in STEM subjects at an early age and miss opportunities to develop critical thinking, creativity, and confidence. This matters to my community because STEM skills are increasingly important for future careers and for solving challenges facing society. Every child should have the opportunity to discover their potential and develop a lifelong interest in learning.

Your Solution: How are you solving this problem? Share your specific solution.

STEM RolePlay Lab uses interactive role-playing experiences to make STEM education more engaging and accessible. Participants take on the roles of scientists, engineers, inventors, environmental researchers, medical investigators, or technology innovators. Through guided activities and hands-on challenges, students work together to solve problems, conduct experiments, and present solutions. Rather than simply learning about science, students experience what it feels like to be a scientist. The program is designed to: • Increase STEM interest and confidence • Encourage teamwork and leadership • Develop problem-solving skills • Make STEM accessible to diverse learners Future workshops may be offered through schools, libraries, museums, and community organizations to reach more students.

Impact: How has your project created impact / made a difference so far? Or, if at an early stage, what will impact look like?

Although the project is currently in its early stage, the goal is to create meaningful educational impact for students in our community. Success will be measured through: • Number of students participating • Student feedback and engagement • Increased interest in STEM careers • Growth in confidence and problem-solving skills Within the first year, I hope to pilot workshops reaching dozens of students and establish partnerships with local community organizations. Long term, STEM RolePlay Lab aims to inspire hundreds of young learners and create a scalable model that can be replicated in other communities.

Your Innovation: What is different about your project compared to other programs or solutions already out there? How is your project new or innovative?

Many STEM programs teach scientific content through lectures, demonstrations, or traditional classroom activities. STEM RolePlay Lab is different because it combines STEM education with role-playing and identity-based learning. Students do not simply learn about scientists; they become scientists. This experiential approach helps students connect personally with STEM concepts while developing confidence, communication skills, creativity, and leadership. The model is flexible, low-cost, and highly adaptable for schools, museums, libraries, and community organizations. By helping students imagine themselves as future innovators, STEM RolePlay Lab focuses not only on knowledge acquisition but also on identity formation and empowerment.

How many people are on your team?

Your team: What role(s) do your team members play? How do you share leadership with them?

Our team currently includes three members. I serve as the founder and project lead, coordinating planning, curriculum design, partnerships, and outreach. Team members assist with activity development, volunteer coordination, and event facilitation. We share leadership by collaboratively discussing ideas, solving challenges together, and encouraging everyone to contribute their strengths.

What’s Next: What are the next steps you plan to take to grow or strengthen your project over the next year? If your project is still in the idea stage, describe the steps you will take over the next three months to launch or begin developing it.

Over the next year, I plan to: • Pilot STEM RolePlay Lab workshops in community settings • Build partnerships with local schools, libraries, and museums • Recruit student volunteers • Develop additional STEM role-play modules • Collect participant feedback and improve programming • Expand outreach to reach more students from diverse backgrounds My goal is to establish a sustainable program that inspires more young people to explore STEM and develop leadership skills through experiential learning.

How do you encourage other people to join your project or learn about the problem you’re working on? If you have a new idea, tell us how you will do this in the future.

I plan to engage students, parents, educators, and community organizations through workshops, presentations, social media, and community events. Student volunteers will be encouraged to help facilitate activities and recruit peers, creating a growing network of young changemakers. As participation increases, students will not only learn STEM concepts but also become ambassadors who inspire others to get involved. Through partnerships and peer-to-peer engagement, the project can create a lasting culture of curiosity, innovation, and community service.
