For participants under 13, an adult ally (for example, a teacher, youth worker, parent, or mentor) must complete the submission on your behalf. The story itself should be written in the young person’s own words and perspective. The adult’s role is purely administrative, ensuring safeguarding requirements are met and that you are supported through the process. This is simply to make sure we’re following safeguarding best practice and that you’re supported throughout the process by someone who knows your journey.

Title
Youth work, art and becoming a leader.
Tell us your changemaking story.
My journey into youth work began with art, not just as a creative outlet but as a way of understanding myself and the world. During the Step Into Arts programme in 2023, I found a confidence I didn’t know I had and realised many young people felt the same overwhelm and uncertainty I once did. That moment pushed me to create spaces where they could express themselves and feel heard. In Blantyre, I delivered creative workshops for young people who often hadn’t had access to opportunities like this. These sessions became safe, peer‑led spaces where identity, belonging, and community could grow. Watching young people gain confidence, support each other, and continue creating showed me how powerful creativity is in youth work. It shaped how I lead, listen, and help others find their voice, and it continues to guide the way I work today.
How do you hope your story will inspire others?
- It shows that creativity is a powerful tool for expression, healing, and empowerment - It proves that young people in deprived areas deserve and thrive with creative opportunities - It demonstrates that leadership can grow from vulnerability and shared experience - It encourages others to use their own passions to create change in their communities
Who else is collaborating with you on this?
My work has been supported by local youth groups and community groups, especially Step into the Arts Programme (Youth Scotland and Creative Scotland). While I have led much of this work, I collaborate closely with youth workers, facilitators, and the young people themselves to ensure everything remains youth-led and rooted in the creative arts.
I confirm that all information submitted is accurate and that I have obtained all necessary consents for participation and media use.
